Indigestion: What Causes It?

To learn what causes indigestion, you must first understand about digestion. When you eat and the food goes into the stomach it encounters stomach acid.

Most food is digested in the large intestine by bacteria. This action produces intestinal gas. This alone, is not what causes indigestion. When too much intestinal gas is produced you may experience burping, flatulence, cramps, and bloating.

This is indigestion and it is caused, in part, by eating foods the large intestine cannot digest very well. In other words, the intestinal bacteria has to work harder to digest this food and the byproduct of this action is an over abundance of intestinal gas. This is the action that causes indigestion.

You may have experienced a great deal of flatulence or painful bloating after eating baked beans or bean soup. Beans are very hard to digest and so is meat. It has been said the more rare the meat, the better it is to digest. This is not to suggest we go on a raw meat diet, rather, that we eat certain other foods or take a supplement (Beano, etc.) when we know we may be eating foods that are likely to be gas producing.

Although we need protein, too much at one time causes indigestion. We may want to try eating a little less protein and add other, more beneficial, foods to balance out the diet. A diet consisting of an abundance of protein does the body some damage. The liver can be depleted of salt causing it not to function properly. The answer is not to run for the salt shaker, but to eat more foods that are rich in sodium. Cucumbers, Zucchini, and celery are three sodium rich foods.

There is also the fact that too much protein in the diet will cause a depletion of calcium. Drinking milk may help but it is a protein too. You and your doctor should discuss a good calcium supplement if you are eating a protein rich diet.

The causes of indigestion are quite plain. By doing a bit of research, you may be able to find that balance of foods and get rid of painful indigestion.
